SSRP provides support for club development, community walking, Fit Walk initiatives, walking club information and national events such as Operation Transformation Walk.
Sligo Walks is a collaborative website, developed between Sligo County Council, Sligo Leader Partnership/Rural Recreation Officer and Sligotourism to highlight/capture all the known public walks in Co. Sligo.
Sligo boasts a range of walks including two premier long distance linear walking routes – The Sligo Way and The Miners Way and Historical Trail.
Currently there are over sixty walks across all types of terrain from coastal to forest, lakeshore to upland and everything in between! These trails are all within a short travel distance from Sligo City. So whether you are a beginner or an experienced recreational trail user, there is a walk for everyone to enjoy.

Walking Club Development
SSRP is committed to supporting the development of new walking clubs in County Sligo. Support and grant aid assistance may be available for the establishment of formal walking clubs which are affiliated to the National Governing Body (Mountaineering Ireland). Club development support is provided in areas including club planning, developing club structures, recruitment and training of volunteers and walking leaders, administration and development of new opportunities for increased participation in walking.
Community Walking Groups
Community Walking Groups in County Sligo are established in community settings as opposed to formal stand alone walking club structures. Usually groups are linked to an existing community structure such as Family Resource Centre, Community Development organisation, Community Centre etc. Generally, the Community Walking Groups focus on walks for mixed ability levels, moderate duration (one to one and half hours maximum). and on defined tracks and trails. SSRP provides information and resources for the establishment of new Community Walking Groups.
The overall aim of this SSRP programme is to promote physical fitness through walking and to develop an understanding of best practice in getting the most from your walk. This programme has many parts including the indoor fit walk programme, pole pushin programme (indoor and outdoor using Nordic poles) and an outdoor foot pumping programme which caters for all levels of physical fitness. All these programmes, which are 5 weeks in duration are facilitated by a qualified Fit Walk tutor and provide a mixture of theory and practical sessions.
