Active Seniors

Go for Life

Living well means being active and Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership’s Go for Life programme celebrates physical activity for older people through the provision of a range of physical activity opportunities and initiatives locally.

The Go for Life Programme aims to increase participation among older people in recreational sport and physical activity. The programme is administered by Age and Opportunity.

A Go for Life National Grant Scheme for Sport and Physical Activity for Older People is administered annually and is advertised each September. Active age clubs and organisations catering for older adults throughout County Sligo are supported to apply for funding for physical activity programmes.

The national grant scheme is just one element of the Go for Life programme and complements the other main strands in the programme:

• Active Living programme

• Sports Participation programme

Go for Life is co-ordinated locally by Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership and further details are available from Shane Hayes at 071 9161511 or shane@sligosportandrecreation.ie

At a local level Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership supports programmes and ‘come and try’ events in physical activity for older adults in activities including:

• Mature Movers

• Go for Life Workshops

• Go for Life Games

For further information contact Shane Hayes at 071 9161511 or shane@sligosportandrecreation.ie

Annual Seniors Sports Fest

Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership organises and hosts what has now become the Annual Seniors Sports Fest for Active Age clubs in Co. Sligo. Participants from clubs all over Sligo come together for a wonderful fun-filed day of physical activity and exercise.  The Seniors Sports Fest has now become firmly established as an annual event on the Active Age club calendar with positive feedback received from participants year after year.

The event aims to introduce older adults from active age clubs in Sligo to a variety of appropriate physical activity and promote and encourage it as part of their daily lives. On the day, the activities get underway with a gentle aerobic workout session that gets everybody up and moving. Following on from this, everyone embarks on an enjoyable ‘Walk for All’ around the IT Sligo Athletics Track and environs. Attendants then got the opportunity to participate in a Boccia demonstration and Kurling games and a competition as well as as Dance, Pilates, Archery, Gym workouts and Go for Life Games. The day is thoroughly enjoyed by all participants judging by the feedback each year,  with huge congratulations extended to the Active Age participating for their sense of fun and enjoyment in getting fully involved in the physical activity and remaining active as part of their daily living.
