Community Sports Hubs

A Community Sports Hub is a collective of progressive sports clubs and other local organisations that want to work together to improve sports offered in their local community.

Community Sports Hubs are funded by Sport Ireland under Dormant Accounts with a focus on disadvantaged communities.

A Community Sports Hub can combine a number of facilities/ organisations in a geographical area or it may simply be a single venue hosting many clubs. Hubs provide information, support and advice on a wide range of sports and physical activities to make it easier for people to become more active.

The objective is to bring communities and groups interested in promoting sports participation together to plan, co- ordinate and deliver increased sport and physical activity opportunities.

Key areas of work in a Community Sports Hub involves:

  • Capacity Building
  • Programming
  • Building Strong Clubs
  • Enhancing Facility Usage

East City Community Sports Hub

The Sligo East City Community Sports Hub is a collective of progressive community organisations, sports clubs and agencies working together, as part of the Cranmore Regeneration Project, to develop a model of active partnership which leads to increased participation in sport and physical activity in the disadvantaged area of the Sligo East City.

The partners include Cranmore Co-operative Society, Abbeyquarter Community Centre, Cranmore Resource House Project, Abbeyquarter Men’s Group, Sligo Regional Sports Centre, St. John’s GAA, Sligo Lawn Bowls Club, Sligo City Boxing Club and Sligo Cricket Club.

Through the support of the SSRP, the Hub provides a diverse range of sporting activities, by engaging with community and sporting groups, encouraging community leadership, enhancing facilities and bringing stakeholders together to plan and deliver sport in the East City area, including Walking, Lawn Bowls, Community Soccer, Summer Camps, Water Sport opportunities, Cycling, GAA, Boxing, Outdoor Gym and fitness programmes.

While SSRP coordinates and provides expertise for the Hub, the Hub is led by local community organisations through a ‘bottom up’ community approach. On this basis the community are largely responsible for the choice and the realisation of the sports programmes and activities.

Enniscrone Community Sports Hub

The Enniscrone Community Sports Hub formed in 2020 aims to increase participation in sport and physical activity through a model of delivery which has a partnership approach at its core.

Community organisations, sports clubs, NGBs and statutory agencies will work collectively to increase participation opportunities facilitated by SSRP, including West Sligo Family Resource Centre, the Enniscrone Community Council, Enniscrone Kilglass GAA, Kilglass Enniscrone Soccer Club, Enniscrone Golf Club, Water Point Leisure Centre, Enniscrone’s Men Shed, 7th Wave Surf School, Castleconnor Community Council, Castleconnor GAA and Swim Ireland.
