Schools Indoor Rowing Blitz
New Records set in Schools Indoor Rowing Blitz
Sligo Rowing Club in partnership with Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership hosted the now annual Secondary Schools Indoor Rowing Blitz on 18th December.
The event moved to the larger facility of Sligo Sports Complex this year to accommodate the growing number of students participating with just under 250 students rowing on the day. The event was open to all level of rowers with a team event of a 2000m row for time and an individual event of max meters rowed in a time cap of 5minutes to choose from.
The event ran for 3 hours with non-stop action. The team events had 6 lanes of rowers with waves going every 15minutes, while the individual event was running in tandem with 11 lanes and waves starting every 10mins. This volume of rowers and the MC and music management of Daithí O’Reilly created an excellent atmosphere for the rowers and spectators alike. Numerous categories in the individual event saw records broke and many students setting personal bests on previous events.
Indoor rowing is a tough physical sport but it is also an extremely inclusive sport which allows students of all ability levels to take part. There was a good uptake on the Inclusive category which saw Corran College, Summerhill College and Ballinode College represented across the individual and team events. Over all 9 schools from Sligo were represented and 1 school from Boyle.
Winners in each category received a winning a pennant to display in their schools. Results list can be viewed below.
The event is run as part of the SSRP Urban Outdoor Adventure Initiative, a Sport Ireland project funded through Dormant Accounts.
