Bike Week 11th to 19th May 2024
Bike Week is a celebration and promotion of all that’s great about bikes and cycling.
Bike Week is a national event co-ordinated locally by Sligo County Council and Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership with support from many local cycling clubs and community organisations. There are numerous free cycling related events running in Sligo throughout bike week 11th to 19th May listed below, you can view a full list national events at bikeweek.ie.

Family Fun Cycle Festival - 11th May
‘National Bike Week – Family Fun Cycling Festival’
TBC, Sligo Saturday 11th May from 11am to 1.00pm
All ages and abilities! Free fun for everyone!
Skills and drills fun with bicycles and balance bikes.
Bikes must be road worthy with working brakes and both adults and children must wear helmets when cycling.

Photo Competition 11th to 19th May
Ballisodare Bay Cycling Club Photo Competition
Join the Bike Week Photo Competition and share your finest photos that capture the joy and advantages of cycling! Submit your entries on Ballisodare Bay Cycling Club Facebook Page, tagging @CyclingIreland, @transportforireland and @BallisodareBayCyclingClub. Don’t miss out on using the hashtags #BikeWeek and #bbccphotocomp for your entry to count. the winners will be rewarded with fantastic bike related prizes you won’t want to miss!

Terms and Conditions
- The competition is exclusively open to individuals participating in cycling activities within Co. Sligo. Proof of residency or presence in Sligo may be required to validate entry.
- The submitted photo must be related to cycling and taken during Bike Week 11th to 19th May 2024
- Entries must be submitted on Ballisodare Bay Cycling Club Facebook Page, by tagging @CyclingIreland, @BallisodareBayCyclingClub using the #BikeWeek and #bbccphotocomp
- The entrant must be 18 or over
- Permission must be obtained from any individuals appearing in the photo to use their image for the competition
- The competition closes at 11.59pm on the final day of Bike Week (19th May 2024)
- A panel of judges will select the winners based on their ability to capture the essence of cycling
- The judges’ decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered into
- All photos must be taken within County Sligo

Balance Bike Come & Try Events - Various Dates
Balance Bike Come & Try
Come join us with your 2 to 5 years olds to find out what Balance Bikes are all about. A balance bike is a lightweight, pedal-less child’s bike which facilitates balance and propulsion. Children run along whilst seated, push off the ground to create forward movement and use their feet to slow down and stop safely. Balance Bikes help children develop gross motor skills, spatial awareness, bilateral co-ordination and enhance their physical literacy and is the first step to a life long skill of cycling.
- Bikes available – Balance Bikes and Helmets will be provided if needed – please select on booking
- Age Limit: 2 to 5 years
- Parents must stay onsite for the duration of the session

Children’s Cycling Skills and Drills - Various Dates
Children’s Skills and Drills
A fun cycle session for Children aged 5 to 12 years delivered by experienced cycling coaches, sessions available for beginners, improvers and advanced. Children should bring their own bikes to best learn how to use them, but if bikes are needed these can be booked at registration. Make sure bikes have working brakes and pumped tyres. Helmets must be wore for the duration of the lesson. Children will learn skills around Balance, Pedaling, Braking and Cornering. Cycling takes place in an enclosed outdoor area safe from traffic. Not been on a bike in over 30 years or more! Never learned to cycle! Then come along to our adult and teen guided cycles, where you will be guided back on to the bike. Small group size, suitable for beginner and novice cyclists, taking place on park cycle lanes away from busy roads, guided by friendly patient instructors. Come to one session or come to them all. Each session is 1 hour, bikes and helmets provided.

Wednesday 15th May is National Cycle to Work Day for Bike Week. So leave that car at home and take the bike instead.

Intro to MTB - 18th May
Beginner MTB sessions
As Ernest once said: ‘It is riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them’ and we couldn’t agree more. Join us for a beginner mountain biking lesson and let a bike take you places that a car never will.
Learn the basics of this wonderful sport on Coolaney Mountain Bike Trails. Each lesson is 1.5hrs long. Various age groups and session available see below to book.

Bike Orienteering Family Fun - May 19th
BIKE ORIENTEERING – CLICK HERE TO BOOK
- Sunday May 19th at 11am to 1pm Cleveragh Park Sligo.
- Something for the whole family to enjoy.
- Taking place in an enclosed park, cycle the bikes trails while following your map to locate the markers, finish the course to get a reward.
- Suitable for all ages and abilities.
- Some Bikes and Helmets available to use or bring your own, must be road worthy. Children must be accompanied by a parent/guardian on the course at all times (short course parent/guardian may walk beside children, (Some balance bikes, handcycles, trikes available, please call the office to enquire)
