Strong Partnerships create Opportunities in Kayaking
There are three successful kayak clubs established in Sligo; Sligo Kayak Club based at Doorly Park and two school based kayak clubs, Sligo Grammar School Kayak Club and Summerhill College Kayak Club.
Through the Urban Outdoor Adventure Initiative SSRP has worked in partnership with these clubs and other groups to increase opportunities for participation in kayaking.
Sligo Grammar School Kayak Club hosted Sligo Community Training Centre students on an introduction to Kayak Course for the third year, this has become a very successful partnership where the club shares it resources to give opportunities to the wider community to experience kayaking.
Sligo Kayak Club hosts a successful WOW (Women on Water) Kayaking programme during the summer months. This programme is a partnership between SSRP, Sligo Kayak Club, Canoeing Ireland Bridge the Gap and Cranmore Co-op. It is creating opportunities for women living locally to the Sligo Kayak Club on the banks of Lough Gill in Doorly Park to experience kayaking in a supportive friendly environment.
The annual Schools Kayak Competition has successfully grown in numbers through support from the Urban Outdoor Adventure Initiative with participation growing from xx to 48 in the last 2 years.
This will grow even further through the establishment of a third school kayak club at Mercy College Sligo.
