Summer Camp Activity Brochure 2019

in Events / by SSRP
July 12, 2019

For the past number of years Youth Sport West in association with Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership have produced an Annual Summer Camp Activities Brochure detailing all of the various camps and activities which take place throughout Sligo during the summer months. These camps provide the ideal opportunity for young people of all ages and abilities to participate in a range of sporting activities in a controlled, safe and fun environment.

Summer time is the perfect time for children to take part in various sporting activities and, by getting involved in quality experiences at this stage of their lives, it will increase the likelihood that they will stay involved in sport throughout the year and into later life.

If you are running a sport or multi activity camp in Sligo and your details are not listed here please contact SSRP office on 0719161511 or email theresa@sligosportandrecreation.ie with camp details.

Women on Water 2019

in Events / by SSRP
June 26, 2019

Sligo Yacht Club is running a Beginner Sailing Programme for Women over 2 weekends, 6th, 7th, 13th and 14th July from 10am-4pm. This is a great opportunity to try something new, learn how to sail and meet the club. Limited places available. To book your place book now

Here is what a previous participant said about the course.

When I agreed to do the Women on Water Sailing course with SYC I got a lot more than I expected! I’m only sorry that I didn’t do it sooner!
Two of the best weekends of my summer have been spent learning to sail around Sligo Bay with a fantastic group of women while doing the Women on Water sailing course with SYC. What a great way to enjoy the very best of what Sligo has to offer – great outdoor adventure, amazing scenery and the best craic with a great group of lovely women.
We got to experience sailing in all conditions –  from windy recoveries to bobbing around on a lovely sunny day and ‘racing’ around the bay in a steady breeze.
I never thought starting out that I would actually be able to helm a boat safely around the bay after two weekends (and one or two accidental swims). But we were guided through the ropes by two very enthusiastic and patient instructors. Even when the weather made things a bit hairy, they made us feel safe on the water and the made the experience a very enjoyable one.
Thank you to all involved for such an enjoyable experience – Una for organising it; our brilliant instructors – Sarah, Helen and Sam; Karl and Mick for keeping us safe; and my new friends – all the ladies who participated. See you for supervised sailing on Sunday’s

2019 SuperValu Women’s Walk to Run 5K Series kicks off Fri 3rd May…

in Events / by SSRP
April 10, 2019

The Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership (SSRP) 2019 Supervalu Fit 4 Life Women’s 5K Series, targeting women of all ability levels aged 16 years and over begins next week. There is a new format for this year’s series with the number of events reduced from six down to three and each event in this years series will take place on a Friday evening. It is hoped that these changes will ensure more women can participate in as many of the events as possible. Coordinated by Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership in conjunction with County Sligo Athletics Board and the local Athletic clubs around the county the series is now in its ninth year and continues to appeal to local women of all abilities and fitness levels. This year each of the 3 events in the series will be each hosted on three Friday evenings in May by the three local clubs (Sligo AC, North Sligo AC, and South Sligo AC). This years event begins on Tuesday the 3rd May with Sligo AC hosting the first 5K at Doorly Park. Registration for this event takes place from 6.30pm at the ??? Riverside with the route starting and finishing around the Doorly Park area. Grange provides the location for the second event in the series two weeks later on Tuesday the 17th May hosted by North Sligo AC with the South Sligo AC concluding the series in Tubbercurry on 24th May with awards/refreshments afterwards.

The series, which is now one of Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnerships flagship Women in Sport initiatives, targets females of all fitness levels and offers women involved the opportunity to walk, jog or run the 5K distance at each event. There will also be added emphasis this year placed on encouraging walkers to participate with all walkers starting 15 minutes (7.15pm) before joggers and runners. Regardless of ability or current fitness levels, the series enables participants to monitor their progress, with awards also being presented to a number of participants who show the greatest improvement in their jogging/running progress over the different events. A series running vest will be provided to all women who take part in at least two of the three events. Any women who participate in all three events will have their names entered into a draw for a separate prize. Participation in the Series costs €5 per event payable at registration each evening from 6.30pm with walkers starting at 7.15 pm sharp followed by joggers and runners at 7.30pm. For more information contact Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership on 071 9161511 or check our website www.sligosportandrecreation.ie or Facebook page facebook/sligosportandrecreationpartnership

Biggest numbers to date at annual Girls Active Activity Festival

in Events / by SSRP
March 9, 2019

The annual Girls Active Activity Festival took place 7th March with over 200 young women from across county Sligo arriving at the IT Sligo Knocknarea Arena to participate in a range of activities including Yoga, Dance, Gym, Spinning, Boxing, Soccer, Indoor Rowing, HIIT Class, Archery, Rugby and Martial Arts. There was a very positive atmosphere at the festival as the girls celebrated their year long participation in the girls only ‘Girls Active’ Programme in their schools.

Girls Active, a joint programme between the Health Services Executive and Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership, is currently running in 13 secondary schools and training centres throughout County Sligo. It aims to increase the number of teenage girls involved in long-term regular physical activity through the provision of non-competitive extra-curricular activities in schools, while developing more supportive environments. The programme takes the emphasis off competition in sport, which can sometimes be off putting for girls, and places a greater emphasis on the social and health benefits of being physically active, while offering opportunities to try out different ways to get active such as yoga, dance, boxercise etc.

Kate Frahill Support co-ordinator for the Girls Active Programme “the programme has being extremely successful this year with over 300 girls participating in activities”. The success of the programme comes down to the Girls Active Co-ordinating teacher based in each school. They volunteer their time to organise programmes and encourage the girls to participate each week.

Third Year Health Science students from IT Sligo assisted at the Girls Active Activity Festival.  They volunteer each year to help deliver activities and be group leaders, making the day an enjoyable experience for all those attending. If you would like any information on the Girls Active programme please contact Theresa Kilgannon at Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership at 0719161511 Email: theresa@sligosportandrecreation.ie or check out www.sligosportandrecreation.ie.
